A Long Walk to Water
In the novel 'A Long Walk to Water' by Linda Sue Park a character I found interesting was Uncle Jewiir. Uncle Jewiir is Kind, Calm and Brave. While he leads the group to the camp he also makes sure that Salva keeps his spirit up and makes it to the camp. Uncle Jewiir helps Salva through the though times and the hard journey. Multiple things such as losing friends and family to starting to believe they wont make it to the refugee camp make Salva's journey harder. But Uncle Jewiir, no matter what had happened, made sure Salva perseveared and kept going. Even when Uncle Jewiir died, Salva thought about what Uncle Jewiir had said to him in the dessert and used it to get himself through the time where he was in the refugee camp.
Uncle Jewiir, although being a soldier in the Sudanese war, is very calm in stressful times. Uncle Jewiir lead the group through the lion infested Atuol tribes land. He also lead the group through the extremely dry Akobo dessert. These journeys killed people, but they dropped Salva's belief about the group making it to the refugee camp. Luckily, Uncle Jewiir is calm about the situation and helps Salva get through the emotional times of losing family and friends because of the war. Uncle Jewiir is also very kind.
Uncle Jewiir keeps everyones hopes up while walking by being kind. He makes sure everyone is safe and happy while they are walking to the refugee camp.Uncle Jewiir was going to return to the war to help others. But he sacrificed himself so that the group could make it to the refugee camp unharmed. I think he was kind because he was willing to go back into the war to save more lives even though he would probably die. I also find that Uncle Jewiir was a very brave man.
I think Uncle Jewiir is brave because he did stuff that would likely get him killed, so that others could live. Uncle Jewiir did countless brave things such as walking through treacherous places and fighting in the war. Although the group had to walk through the Atuol tribes land and the Akobo dessert, Uncle Jewiir lead the group on the dangerous journey to the refugee camp. Uncle Jewiir also wanted to go back to the war to save more peoples lives. But that idea was cut short when Uncle Jewiir willingly sacraficed himself so that the group could make it to the camp. I think he was extremely brave to have not fought against the strangers even though he knew that if he did not fight back that they would kill him.
In conclusion I think Uncle Jewiir is calm, kind and brave. Uncle Jewiir was my favourite character. I think 'A Long Walk to Water' is a very interesting book with two different story's from two different people. Uncle Jewiir was a great man who bravely fought for the rebels and safely escorted the group to the refugee camp.
