A Long Walk to Water Essay
This week we have been learning how to write an essay. We had to write an essay about a character from a book we have been reading called 'A Long Walk to Water'.
A Long Walk to Water
In the novel 'A Long Walk to Water' by Linda Sue Park a character I found interesting was Uncle Jewiir. Uncle Jewiir is Kind, Calm and Brave. While he leads the group to the camp he also makes sure that Salva keeps his spirit up and makes it to the camp. Uncle Jewiir helps Salva through the though times and the hard journey. Multiple things such as losing friends and family to starting to believe they wont make it to the refugee camp make Salva's journey harder. But Uncle Jewiir, no matter what had happened, made sure Salva perseveared and kept going. Even when Uncle Jewiir died, Salva thought about what Uncle Jewiir had said to him in the dessert and used it to get himself through the time where he was in the refugee camp.
Uncle Jewiir, although being a soldier in the Sudanese war, is very calm in stressful times. Uncle Jewiir lead the group through the lion infested Atuol tribes land. He also lead the group through the extremely dry Akobo dessert. These journeys killed people, but they dropped Salva's belief about the group making it to the refugee camp. Luckily, Uncle Jewiir is calm about the situation and helps Salva get through the emotional times of losing family and friends because of the war. Uncle Jewiir is also very kind.
Uncle Jewiir keeps everyones hopes up while walking by being kind. He makes sure everyone is safe and happy while they are walking to the refugee camp.Uncle Jewiir was going to return to the war to help others. But he sacrificed himself so that the group could make it to the refugee camp unharmed. I think he was kind because he was willing to go back into the war to save more lives even though he would probably die. I also find that Uncle Jewiir was a very brave man.
I think Uncle Jewiir is brave because he did stuff that would likely get him killed, so that others could live. Uncle Jewiir did countless brave things such as walking through treacherous places and fighting in the war. Although the group had to walk through the Atuol tribes land and the Akobo dessert, Uncle Jewiir lead the group on the dangerous journey to the refugee camp. Uncle Jewiir also wanted to go back to the war to save more peoples lives. But that idea was cut short when Uncle Jewiir willingly sacraficed himself so that the group could make it to the camp. I think he was extremely brave to have not fought against the strangers even though he knew that if he did not fight back that they would kill him.
In conclusion I think Uncle Jewiir is calm, kind and brave. Uncle Jewiir was my favourite character. I think 'A Long Walk to Water' is a very interesting book with two different story's from two different people. Uncle Jewiir was a great man who bravely fought for the rebels and safely escorted the group to the refugee camp.

15 Minute Writing
We are learning how to write essays in our class. We had to write a letter to the author of an argument about if cats or dogs are better. This is my letter.
Dear Author
I completely agree that cats are superior to dogs. My dog poop all over the back lawn and occasionally in my house. Whereas I don’t even know what my cats poop looks like. And there is the terrible smell.
The smell is really revolting. Its so strong sometimes I cant even find the source. It could be any where. And when I find the source I panic “WHAT DO I DO WITH IT!” Then when I finally dispose of it. THE SMELL STICKS AROUND! For what feels like hours. Dogs have little care about there personal hygiene.
Dogs will roll in the mud, play in the rain, eat every thing and they still just waltz inside as if the house is meant to be muddy and wet and have random things lying around. Cats on the other hand don’t leave a speck of dirt on them (even if it means licking themselves. But the noise that dogs can make…
It is so loud! There will be something stupid like another dog on TV or bird outside and all of a sudden… BARK! BARK! BARK! SHHHHHHH!!!!!

Rugby is better than Soccer
I disagree that rugby is better than soccer. Soccer is more fun than rugby. You can run fast you can score goals or you could be the goalkeeper who tries to save all the goals. Soccer is also a lot safer than rugby.
Rugby is really dangerous because you are constantly smashing into one another. Soccer although there are occasions where there is an injury it is very rare. It is also usually less harmful than breaking a bone or something else that happens a lot in rugby. Soccer is also more popular than rugby.
Although soccer is less popular in New Zealand it is more people playing it world wide. There are about 265 million people in the world who play soccer compared to rugbys 6 million players. Thats around 44 times as more people playing soccer than rugby.

15 Minute Writing
In home room we are learning how to structure a paragraph. Today we had to write about a super power we would like to have.
My Dream Super Power
If I could have any super power I would have teleportation. I think teleportation would have lots of pros. I could teleport any where any time. I would be able to get places really easily.
Getting places would be really easy. I would just disappear and pop up out of nowhere. It would be quick and free. Instead of paying to fly to another country I could just teleport there. I would help people.
Helping people would be easy. I could take peoples stuff to others like a courier. If someone was mailing something to someone I could just teleport to the person give it to them then teleport back. But I think I would have to keep it a secret.
I would have to keep it a secret from others. Because someone could want to do experiments on me. I think they would do it so they can find out what they need to do to be able to teleport. Although, I could just teleport away from them. I would keep it a secret just incase.

ALWTW section 4
Q1
Yes I think he would because Salva is kind. Although I do not think it would be a good idea.
Q2
Because, like Salva, uncle is kind and wants to help others.
Q3
The groups attitude changed because his uncle wasn't there to protect him and they thought that he would be slow and sad without his uncle.
Q4
Salva realises his family is gone when he is trying to catch up with the lady but he gets a flash back about what his uncle said and realises what he really meant. The memory of his uncle giving him lots of goals to walk to is what kept him going.

ALWTW Section 3
Q1
Because his uncle kept talking to him. No.
Q2
The dessert because it has nothing but shrubs, rocks and sand.
Q3
He keeps giving him goals to reach. He would have given up along time ago. If someone was in the cross country and they wanted to back out half way through.
Q4
He stubs his toe and doesn't want to carry on but his uncle keeps talking to him.

Where are my family? I predict they are running as well.
When will I see them again? I predict he will see them when he gets to the other country.
Question 3
Nya's journey is hard and tiring. On the way there she can drag the empty container behind her or do other things with it. But on the way back the container is full and heavy meaning she has to carry it on her head. I would feel really pressured because every one is relying on you.
Question 4
They tell themselves apart with the symbols on there face and their language.
We tell ourselves apart with language, accent and uniform.
ALWTW Section 2
Q1
Because they think he will slow them down. But also because they aren't finding enough food sources to feed everyone. I feel that it is selfish but at the same time I get why their first decision was no because there would be to many people to feed.
me

She has to get up every day to walk every day to the water. Sport.
Q3
I learned that you can smoke a beehive with a fire. I learned that you can get water under dried up lakes. You can survive a long time without food. Yes because hes still alive.

Narrative Animation
In home room we have been doing a narrative assessment. First we had to plan our narrative. Then we had to write our story. We then had to make an animation about our story. Then finally we had to record us playing our narrative while reading our story using Screencastify. Something I have learnt in this process is about how to improve my narrative writing, and also how to make a detailed narrative animation. This was also my first time using screencastify. I learnt that timing was important when trying to do my narrative voiceover.

Dog napping
"Isi, Isi!" Called Kaia. "Where are you Isi" She looked and looked but Kaia couldn't find Isi. But then. A light green beam shot up into the sky. Kaia rushed over to the bushes from which the beam had shot up into the sky. Carefully, she peered through the leaves. "Argh!" Screamed Kaia tears rolling down her cheeks. A little green person was hunched over eating what looked like Isi little dog leg.
Then the little green alien slowly turned it's head to look at Kaia. It hissed then scampered away. She tried to follow it when a humming sound filled the air. Kaia looked up to see a giant red space ship hovering above her head. Green beams started to fly all over the place they were abducting dogs. She quickly grabbed a hold of a dog as it was being sucked up.
When she got on the ship she was greeted by a group of angry aliens. They darted towards Kaia but she just kicked them away. Then a group of massive magenta aliens came running over. She ran for her life weaving through aliens and dogs. Then she came across a room filled with caged dogs. There was a guard but it was snoozing on the job. Then BOOM! Outside of the ship the US army had started tofire at the UFO. There was a terrible shuddering noise the ship seemed to be plummeting down to earth. Kaia grabbed the keys from the guard and started to unlock the cages. "Isi!" Shouted Kaia. Sitting in the cage was Isi, but there was a lot of blood and Isi was missing a leg. She picked up Isi and started to try and find an escape route. She jumped in a escape pod and hoped it would take them to safety. CRASH! The ship exploded.

Sean's Search
Hastily, Jack and John paddled against the ferocious waves. Melissa was holding tightly onto Sean. They were getting closer and closer to shore. Until WHOOSH. An arrow went straight past the boat. King Josh lll had his army firing arrows towards them. They paddled to shore now hundreds of arrows flying towards them. Left Sean in the boat and pushed it out into the rough river. Hours later an old man found Sean crying on the shore next to the rigid boat.
19 years later. Sean was having a great life in the town. Everyone was nice happy and caring. Until “CHARGE”. The sound of hoofs was heard and King Josh lll was raiding the village. Sean was trying to run when King Josh lll came racing over. “Give me all you have.” He demanded. “Hold on, you look familiar. Ah yes your Mellisa’s son aren’t you. I was wondering if I would find you.” Swiftly, Sean got up kicked the horses leg and ran. He ran and ran and didn’t stop. Sean eventually took refuge in cave hoping nobody would find him. Angrily, Sean paced the cave for hours thinking about his parents. He came to the conclusion that they were dead. Planning how he would get his revenge Sean was lighting a fire. Then he drifted to sleep.
In the mourning, Sean started to journey towards king Josh’s kingdom. Days later he reached the humongous castle. There were towers everywhere and guards everywhere. Quickly, Sean jumped into a covered wagon and slipped into the castle when he got out. The guards immediately grabbed him and took him to their king. Although being grabbed by the guards Sean arrived at the kings room having slain the guards. Sean barged through the door to find the king ready to fight him. Sean picked up a sword from a suit of armour on the wall and they fought. The battle went on for hours but eventually Sean dealt a devastating blow piercing the kings arm. The king surrender and Sean was left to kill him. “Before you kill me what is it that you desired.” Asked the king curiously. “ What I want is to avenge my family!” Shouted Sean. “I didn’t kill them Spear me and I will take you to their cell.”...

15 minute writing
Quietly, we snuck out of the window. We snuck out to the garden then. “Ay what ya doin out here!” Shouted a man with an Australian accent. We scampered off as fast as cheetah’s. Down the hill, through the bush and onto the beach.
Sadly, lobsters are adored by humans for their taste. Hence being in the position we were just in. Only three of us got out. My brother Fred My friend Greg and me were the only ones of dozens to get away. Then I saw something red limping towards us. Luckily, it was my sister Jess. “I was in the middle of being cut up, when the do swung open!” She panted. “A plump lady walked in and started shouting...” “How could you let them get away! We can’t serve dinner unless we have 47 roasted lobsters…”

Capital E Festival of the Arts
On Thursday we went on a school trip to Capital E Festival of the Arts. All of the year 7/8 went. There was three really cool shows that we watched.
Title: Gabez
Actors: Masatomi Yoshida and Hitoshi Ono
By: Masatomi Yoshida and Hitoshi Ono
It was a silent comedy act that was really funny. They did a whole bunch of different short acts. The venue was cramped but the rest of it was amazing. My favourite part was when the rubber duck lost its voice.
rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Title: Tröll
Actors: Hannah Smith and Ralph McCubbin Howell
By: Trick of the light theatre
I thought it was really well done. It was unlike any thing I have ever seen and I think a lot of people will be able to connect with the deeper meaning in it. The deeper part was the troll represents depression and letting in the light was telling some one what was happening.
My rating:⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Get NZ Writing - Write Your Own Story
We did a project about poems. We were all given an item. I got a ship in a bottle. Then we all had to write 1 or 2 poems each about our item. I wrote two poems. We also made a class poem using a google form. Then we sent them to another school. We had to get a lot of words and use a thesaurus to make them better. Then we had to use an anagram generator to find an anagram. I also did some words in another language.

Makey Makey
On Thursday we went to the moari land hub. We went there to learn about technology. First we had to make a piano with carrots. Me and Noah found it easy.
Then we had to make a game controller witch we struggled to make the down key work. Then we had to make an object with cardboard, paper and tin foil. We made a pool and Drew did a voice over so when you touch it, it played his voice over. We found it hard to make it all stick together. We did get it finished.

My Poems
The Kitchen
If i'm stupid I might feel the scorching heat of the oven.
I can taste yummy food being cooked.
I can smell delicious food in the cupboard.
I can hear the jug boiling.
I can see my mum cooking.
The Beach
I love feeling the cold water on my legs.
I hate the taste of salt water.
My fish and chips smell great.
The waves crash thunderously on the shore .
The shimmering moon light reflects off of the evening waves.
My Room
I can feel my soft comfortable bed.
My lollies taste amazing.
My room smells like sweet and sour lollies.
The floor creaks whenever some one is coming.
I can see college from my room.
Soccer Pitch
The grass feels soft when I tackle some one.
Some times I taste mud that was kicked up.
The field is filled with the disgusting odour of sweat.
The sound of the ball hitting the cross bar can be relieving and devastating.
I can see mud every where.
